What is that "?" Logo all about???
Several have asked what is the meaning of the black triangle logo containing a yellow question mark decaled on my locomotives. This logo appears on the cab doors of older models or in the stairwells of newer locomotives.
The answer is that this is my adopted safety logo for this railroad. The nice thing about having my own railroad is I get to do things my way.
As an operating officer for a major railroad, I have responded to a number of what we call "Human Factor Incidents" or HFI's. Many of these events result in spectacles that just boggle the mind. These tend to be as minor as run-through switches to sideswipes, derailments minor and major...even head on collisions. I have seen them all.
Invariably, even though the corporate culture is driving up to be kinder, gentler people, the first thought that runs through my mind when arriving on-scene is one of or a combination of the following:
"What the f*#% were you thinking?!?!"
"How the f*#% did you do that?!?!"
"How the f*#% did THAT get THERE?!?!"
"Are you really that f*#% lazy?!?!"
Or the just plan: "What the f*#%?!?!"
And occasionally, when the spectacle is truly breathtaking, there is the "That is really f*#%ing cool!!!!" Of course promptly followed by one or more of the other above questions.
So every railroad has its own safety culture with slogans and logos and reminders. The T&GN and NT&O are no different. In a politically correct real-world drill the question mark logo would be under one of the following phrases on safety posters:
"What Are You Thinking?"
"What Are You Doing?"
"Where Are You Going?"
But I know what the real questions are...and now so do you!
