T&GN/NT&O Roster Template
There are a number of different methods for developing a numbering system for locomotive rosters. Some seem random while others are quite methodical. A popular method is horsepower based numbers, i.e. 3000 HP locomotives in the 3000 series, etc. As locomotive fleets progress, the numbering system has to adjust. Mergers result in blended rosters that have little overall meaning.
Wanting to hi-light the Business Unit aspect of this railroad, I assigned specific blocks of numbers to each business unit. In addition the Business Unit is stencilled on each locomotive.

The locomotive roster here is a unique collection of locomotives that at first glance might make one question certain components of the fleet. If you haven't already looked at it, be sure to visit the pages under the NT&O/T&GN Story tab on this site. Unlike most railroads, this one does not have a rich corporate history. Yes, the routes are old and have deep roots; but, the quick assembly of all of the components to create this "new" Class I artery does not lend to a cohesive locomotive roster with a fleet history and timeline.
Rather this locomotive roster had to be assembled in short order to quickly provide the service advertised to customers and investors. So the below roster was created using what was available on the used locomotive market including locomotives already for sale as well as small batches of locomotives that various Class I's were willing to negotiate sale on. In addition, new locomotive orders were made most economical by both EMD and GE by simply "adding on" to current (1996) and previous locomotive orders placed by other railroads. Therefore certain groups of locomotives will have specific features that match a particular prototype group of locomotives.
Below is a look at what the mechanical team was able to cobble together to run this railroad:
