Cycle Train Business Unit - Network Cycle Trains |
Below is a list of the base train symbols for the Cycle Train Business Unit. The "Cycle Train" concept is very similar to what are called "Shuttle Trains" or "Unit Trains" on other railroads. In keeping with the theme of creating a unique identity for this railroad, some terminology will be crafted and incorporated into the overall scheme. Locomotives assigned to the Cycle Train Business Unit will have "CTBU" lettering on their sides.
The original numbering system classified Cycle Trains with following Train Number ranges:
600-650 - Rock Trains
690-699 - Unit Steel Trains
700-750 - Grain Trains
760-769 - Corn Syrup
770-799 - Ethanol Trains
800-899 - Coal Trains
The original T&GN/NT&O business plan had all of the above commodities under the Cycle Train Business Group with subgroups for each in the marketing department. Because of the seasonal nature of different grain commodities, the Agriculture Business Unit (ABU) was created as the customers and equipment rotation required more attention.
With the advent of ethanol and crude oil cycle trains, rock trains were moved from the Cycle Train Business Unit to to the Agriculture Business Unit to keep the work processes manageable. With this the Agriculture Business Unit was renamed the Ag Business Unit as the name could apply to both the "Agriculture" and "Aggregate" commodities that the Business Unit caters to. Locomotives assigned to unit grain train and rock train service would have "ABU" lettering on their sides.
Empty coal trains have higher priority than loaded coal train (7 vs. 4) as the focus is to push empty trains to the mines for loading. An interesting new traffic pattern arose from the study of the impact of NAFTA on this railroad. U.S. utilities in the Southeast were switching to Western Powder River coal for sulfur content emissions concerns. Conversely, the creation of this "NAFTA Corridor" opened up Mexican markets to Eastern U.S. coal as the need was there and emissions standards are non-existent in Mexico. So on portions of the Meridian Speedway can be found both loaded and empty coal trains operating in both directions.
