My proto-freelanced Illinois Central regional spin-off Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad (Y&MV) is a much smaller railroad than the T&GN/NT&O. As can be expected, the train symbol methodology is also much simpler. To create this small-railroad feel all trains, including yard jobs, have single-digit or double-digit numbers.
There is some randomness in the number pattern by design which I believe adds to the feel of a small railroad without too much high-level corporate methodology. This also creates some separation of numbers between schedules on the same route which is beneficial in the operating world.
The core routes of this Southern Mississippi/Louisiana regional spin-off of the Illinois Central are:
1 - Vicksburg, MS to New Orleans, LA via ICRR trackage rights from Baton Rouge, LA to New Orleans, LA
2 - Natchez, MS to Mobile, AL via ICRR trackage rights from Hattiesburg, MS to Mobile, AL
These routes cross at Roxie, MS allowing for the routes to be combined for the Vicksburg, MS to Mobile, AL corridor.
The trackage rights agreement with the Illinois Central allows the Y&MV the following trains:
1 - Up to two trains a day each-way between New Orleans, LA and Baton Rouge, LA.
2 - One unit train a day each-way between Reserve, LA and Baton Rouge, LA.
3 - Up to Two Trains a Day each-way between Hattiesburg, MS and Mobile, AL.
The Reciprocal side of this agreement allows the Illinois Central the following trains:
1 - Up to two trains a day each-way between Vicksburg, and Baton Rouge, LA - via MCRR trackage rights into Vicksburg.
2 - One unit train a day each-way between Vicksburg, MS and Natchez, MS - via MCRR trackage rights into Vicksburg.
3 - With two weeks notice, up to four trains each-way per day Between Vicksburg, MS and Baton Rouge, LA for planned MW windows on the ICRR - via MCRR. Such events will not last more than five-days and will occur no more frequently than once each month.
Additional trackage-rights trains can be negotiated on a train-by train basis with consideration given to service interruption recovery on either railroad.
The New Orleans Public Belt Railroad (NOPB) handles all of the terminal switching of trains at New Orleans, LA.
The Terminal Railway of Alabama State Docks Railroad (TASD) handles all of the terminal switching of trains at Mobile, AL.
Major customers for the Y&MV are the Georgia Pacific Paper Mill at Ferguson, MS, Georgia Pacific Paper Mill at Gloster, MS,a host of industries at Natchez, MS including and ethanol terminal, coal rail-barge transload facility, and several paper mills, as well as several chemical industries in North Baton Rouge, LA.
