T&GN/NT&O Train Symbols - Locals

T&GN/NT&O Symbol Methodology

Locals and Roadswitchers

The Car Load Business Unit (CLBU) compliments the Manifest Business Unit (MBU).  Cars not in unit train, cycle train, or intermodal service fall under the jurisdiction of the CLBU between the "first and last mile" from and to the shipper and the receiver and the points of classification.  Between points of classification and/or interchange locations the cars are owned by the MBU.

There are three types of trains in the CLBU: Locals, Roadswitchers, and Yard Jobs.  This page will focus on the Locals and Roadswitchers.  On the T&GN/NT&O network, locals flip either on the same day or on the next day with one set of power being allocated for each round trip.  Roadswitchers are generally longer distance or involve more work events with opposing trains originating independently on the same day with unique locomotive consists.

All Locals and Roadswitchers ("L" and "R" symbol suffix) are designated as Priority 3 trains.  The Corridor Superintendent can elevate the priority of these trains on an as needed basis if handling cars that require expedited handling, i.e. customer shut down cars could elevate a train to Priority 9 status.

The symbols below indicate the base schedules that allow all industries to be served.  These schedules can be annulled or have the days of operation modified as traffic patterns dictate.
